The normalisation of suffering and self-deception in Nigeria (2)

Whenever buharimaniacs led by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, boast garrulously about the economic blueprint of this government and throw around numbers purporting to show that the policies are working, I wonder whether they are living in a fantasy island far removed from the harsh realities facing ordinary people like myself. Everywhere people are begging; to even have two good meals a day is becoming very difficult for thousands of families, not to mention decent accommodation with modern amenities. Why is there so much hate in the land? (1)

I shifted on the sofa, stretched out my legs and adjusted my head to allow a clear breathing passage. I have a few more minutes to waste before I start the arduous work. Nigeria has been on my mind for quite some time, and I thought to myself it was time to visit the motherland. I am always excited about the probability of going to Nigeria. This is not only for the opportunity to meet long-time family members and friends but also to catch up with new developments. Continue reading Why is there so much hate in the land? Love the skin you are in

In 2014,  I wrote ‘Brown is the new white’I did so in response to the fact that Nigeria was top of the league table for bleaching. It ratcheted up the love for bleaching by going even paler, in the shade of white. From creams to potions to all out white. No, this is not progress, it is self loathing and misguided.  It is shallow and narrow minded. It is very dangerous and harmful. Nigerian politics: Great award winners emerge

Some simplistic fellow Nigerians quite often naively assume that persons who are nominated for awards in the country may have achieved a lot. It is not always so. Even our national honours award lost its credibility long ago when government started allocating figures to certain institutions and positions like governors, top legislators and ministers instead of outstanding citizens. Perhaps the most common but annoying awards are those organized by the media and civil society groups who for their own material benefits are seen falling on each other to honour the same characters. Sometimes some governors who failed to pay workers’ salaries are honoured while some other honourees have had to walk into EFCC cells a few months after their lavishly published awards. Don’t blame the executive, blame the judiciary, legislature

“Decency, security and liberty alike demand that government officials shall be subjected to the same rules of conduct that are commands to the citizen. In a government of laws, existence of the government will be imperilled if it fails to observe the law scrupulously. Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself. It invites anarchy” - US Supreme Court Justice, Louis D Brandeis, 1856-1941, in the OLMSTEAD case, 1928.
